Lauren D’Amato, 20, was killed in a fatal car accident that occurred on November 28, 2010, around 4:45a.m. in Yorktown Heights, New York. According to Yorktown Fire Chief Martin McGannon, D’Amato was driving a 1995 Honda Accord southbound on Hanover Street when she lost control and struck two trees near California Road.

The impact of the collision was so strong that D’Amato’s car caught fire. Nearby residents evacuated D’Amato out of her car. Unfortunately, this quick help was not enough to save her life. The emergency crew, on their arrival, pronounced her dead. It is not clear what made D’Amato lose control of her vehicle and struck the trees.

Malinda Michaelis Watson, 59, was killed in a fatal San Bernardino County car accident that occurred on November 23, 2010, in the High Desert east of Barstow in  San Bernardino County, approximately 96 miles from San Diego. Bobbie Lee Jones, 22, from Flint Road near Waco, was killed in a fatal Kentucky car accident that occurred on November 20, 2010 on Crooksville Road, near Madison County.According to a Kentucky State Police, Jones was driving her Chevy Cavalier down a road in Richmond when she lost control and hit a mailbox before crashing into a tree.

A nine month old infant, Isaac Alessandro, was killed in a rollover auto accident in Colorado on August 31, 2010, on Interstate 70 (I-70) just west of Glenwood Springs and 17 miles away from San Diego.  Joanne Echeverria, 19, a resident of New Castle, CO, was driving a 2009 Honda Civic when she lost her control and drove the car into the center median, flipped over several times, and came to rest in the westbound lane.

Alessandro was sitting in the rear seat of the car and was ejected out of it while the car was rolling over, landing on the east bound lane. Alessandro was pronounced dead at the accident scene. According to the Colorado State Police, the child was in the safety seat but was not properly restrained.

Echeverria was transported to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs with moderate to critical injuries. The exact cause of this car crash is under investigation, but drugs and alcohol were not involved.

A pedestrian, Mario Antonio Flores Topete, 20, of San Bernardino, was killed in a hit and run traffic accident on August 15, 2010 at around 3:13 a.m.  Topete was walking across the street from a parked car near his home in Sierra Way when a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck struck him.

Police said that the pickup driver, Augustine Ramirez, did not stop and fled from the scene once he realized that he had hit someone. Topete was immediately rushed to Saint Bernardine Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.

Ramirez was arrested some time after the crash near Mt. View Avenue on a suspicion of driving under influence. He was held for the charge of gross vehicular manslaughter.

California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.” Motorists are not only required to stop, but also remain at the scene of the crash and wait until authorities get to the scene. In addition, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs violates California Vehicle Code Section 23152(a) which states that “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”

A 92-year-old Riverside woman succumbed to injuries she sustained from a semi-tractor trailor truck crash on July 16, 2010. Riverside Police Personnel reported that a traffic accident involving a big-rig truck and a car occurred around 1:30 p.m.

Officers on their arrival at the accident scene found that a 2001 Chevy Impala was damaged badly in the crash and the truck was in the wooded area of First Avenue. Both the drivers and the woman passenger in the car were transported to the Loyola Hospital for treatment.  The woman passenger was later pronounced dead.

Preliminary investigation reports state that the Chevy Impala made a left turn in front on the tractor trailor.  The Chevy’s driver, who was the husband of deceased woman, is still in the hospital fighting with his injuries.

Destanee Arlene Little, 19, was killed and two other people sustained serious injuries in a traffic collision near Lodi, California on June 12, 2010. The injured people in this car crash have been identified as David Heredia, 20 and Chaunnel Renberg, 20.

According to the Lodi News Sentinel article, Little was driving his Oldsmobile Cutlass south on West Lane near Armstrong Road.  At that point, a 2008 Honda Accord driver, Benjamin Serratos III, 29, hit the back of Little’s vehicle. Little’s car went out of control and banged into a nearby traffic light.

Little sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead later at a local hospital. Renberg also sustained fractured ribs and abrasions. Serratos fled from the traffic accident scene but was later arrested on suspicion of driving under influence and for causing serious bodily injury.

Four people were killed in a truck accident in Napa County on June 3, 2010, due to negligence of a truck driver who was travelling at a highly risky speed. California Highway Patrol Officers reported that four members killed in this tragic traffic accident–Laura Katherine Smith, 19; Sally Smith, 74; Richard Smith, 80; and Matthew Jay Smith, 48–were all from the same family.

The family’s SUV, a Subaru Forester, had stopped due to heavy traffic, when it was hit by a rear-end collision from a truck driven by Grustavo Lopez, 42. The impact of the collision was so massive that the SUV landed in the pathway of an eastbound big-rig loaded with concrete pies. Luis Marabilla, 44, driving this big-rig tractor trailer had no time for damage control and crushed the SUV.

California Highway Patrol officers believe that Lopez was driving inattentively and was driving at a fast rate of speed violating the stop-n-go traffic light rules at the intersection.  If Lopez is found guilty of causing the death of these four people, he may be held liable for their loss of life, funeral expenses, and other accident related damages. Their family may be entitled for compensation from Lopez and/or from his employer.

An Ohio couple–Dennis Marshall, 61, and Karen Marshall, 59–who were in San Francisco on vacation lost their lives in a car crash on the Interstate Highway 280 off-ramp on June 14, 2010. This car accident occurred at 10:57 a.m., at the Mariposa Street off-ramp from northbound I-280 in the city’s Potrero Hill neighborhood.

The couple was travelling in a taxi from the San Francisco International Airport to the Mark Hopkins San Francisco hotel. It is reported that when the taxi driver wanted to exit the highway, he realized that the taxi’s brakes have failed. He was travelling at about 40mph. The driver then applied the parking brakes, but they also failed. The taxi lost control and crashed in to a highway support beam. The tragic accident did not end here as the taxi caught fire and hit a steel mesh fence.

Despite a head-on collision with the pole, the driver was able to get out of the wrecked car himself.  Unfortunately, the couple had to be pulled out from the burning taxi. The lady died soon after the accident and the gentleman died in the evening at 4:20 p.m. The taxi driver also suffered some serious injuries.

Liane Gertrud Hocking, 69, was killed in a car crash on June 7, 2010 at the intersection of Atwater Jordan and Bert Cane roads. According to a news report published in the Merced Sun Star, Hocking was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant when she collided with a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Carlos Eduardo Vieira.

The initial police investigation has determined that stop signs were present at the Bert Cane intersection only and not at Atwater Jordan. California Highway Patrol officials stated that Hocking drove her car into the intersection and Vieira was not able to prevent this tragic collision. Hocking sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Vieira was lucky enough to escape uninjured. The investigation is being conducted to determine the real cause of this car crash. If Vieira is determined to have been at fault in causing this accident, then he could be held liable for Hocking’s wrongful death. However if unkempt road conditions lead to this auto accident, then the government entities responsible for maintenance if the road could be held liable as well. For example, the absence of a traffic sign or poor vicinity of the sign can also be considered as negligent. Hocking’s family may be entitled for compensation in either case.
